Social Impact of Benfieldside Community Garden

As part of our grant reporting process, we have to provide evidence of the impact of our work. Please see below, where the Headteacher of Benfieldside Primary School has outlined the variety of ways having access to Benfieldside Community Garden as  a communty space has had a positive impact on the children and the staff of the school.

Testimonial

Thank you for your request for a testimonial regarding the impact of your community garden. I am pleased to provide an overview of the ways the garden has benefited our pupils, including our early years, and the wider school community.

The community garden has become an important part of school life at Benfieldside Primary and has delivered a range of positive outcomes for our pupils. Since establishing the garden you have integrated it into a number of purposeful activities. It has been central to a post-SATs project for our Year 6 pupils, offering them an opportunity to engage in reflective, practical work after examinations. You                            have used the space to run forest schools sessions which support pupil wellbeing, resilience and outdoor learning. Pupils have developed new skills through their involvement, including horticultural techniques and practical problem-solving.

For our early years pupils the garden has been especially valuable. It provides a safe, stimulating outdoor classroom where children can explore sensory experiences, develop fine and gross motor skills, and build early scientific understanding through hands-on observation of plants, insects and life cycles. Activities such as planting seeds, watering, harvesting and simple measuring support communication and language development, vocabulary building and early maths concepts (counting, comparing sizes, sequencing). The garden also supports personal, social and emotional development: our youngest pupils learn turn-taking, responsibility for shared tasks and confidence through purposeful, child-led exploration.

Across the age range the garden has promoted teamwork and shared responsibility; children take turns with key tasks and demonstrate care and pride in our local area. It has enabled meaningful partnerships with others in our community and provided valuable extra-curricular experiences. You have organised themed events and opportunities for pupils to mix with children from other local schools, broadening social interaction and collaboration.

Curriculum links are clear and effective. The garden supports our science teaching on living things and life cycles, giving pupils hands-on experiences such as growing and eating produce. There are also regular opportunities for arts and crafts inspired by the garden, which enrich pupils’ creativity and engagement.

With best wishes,

Caroline Addison
