Involving the wider community is a key aim of the project. Karbon Homes lead an initiative called silver surfers, where their aim is to include an consult with the older members of the communities they manage. Recording the memories and their current thoughts about how we can work on the positive aspects of the town adds depth and meaning to the Celebrating Stanley project. Heritage Project South Stanley Junior School

Engaging children in their past is a great way to make them feel part of their community, and this is the aim of this element of the Celebrating Stanley Project. The children will learn about the history of the town, paint, write poems and share their thoughts about what can be done to celebrate and improve the town. They will also be going on a trip to Beamish to have a live experience of what Stanley was like in the past.

‘Celebrating Stanley’ Community Project 2025 South Stanley Junior School

This anthology showcases the work and learning of South Stanley Junior School’s Year 6 children, created as part of the

Celebrating Stanley Project that took place throughout 2025. Over the course of the project, the children created artwork, wrote poetry, shared their ideas for celebrating and improving Stanley, and reflected on what community, pride and belonging mean to them. They became young historians, examining real historical sources and investigating the life of influential people from Stanley’s past. These included Michael Heaviside VC, David Horsley and numerous others. By asking questions and piecing together a historical timeline for Stanley, they experienced at first hand how the past is discovered and understood.
