Happy 40th Birthday to Rendles, Consett!

On their 40th Birthday, Building Self-Belief would like to say a huge thank you to Rendles store for their excellent products, service and support they have given us over the past year, to help us deliver our Household Support Fund.

A Decent Bed!

Having a decent bed isn’t a great deal to ask. Nevertheless, in relation to our recent project linked to the Household Support Fund through Point North (County Durham Community Foundation) what we have realised is how not having a decent bed is a real problem for many families in the local area. Therefore, we are absolutely delighted to be in a position to help our local people and families and buy them new beds.

Happy 40th Birthday

As part of the project we have used local businesses, where possible, and Rendles have been amazing. We have bought bunk beds, double beds, single beds and mattresses all to help our families in need. Within a few hours we have the order placed and the delivery arranged. Rendles is our go to shop for the beds for the community.

Rob said ‘It has been a real honour to support such a great initiative and we would also like to thank Building Self-Belief for their custom. Getting the support from our community is what has made our business such a success over the past 40 years!”

Recipients of the new beds

"I am so grateful to have two new beds for my boys. It has made such a difference for them, and they are definitely sleeping better!"

Thank you

A huge thank you to Rob and the team at Rendles for their excellent service!

We wold also like to thank Point North for their support. Having the Household Support Fund has been such a bonus for Building Self-Belief this year. Whereas in previous years we have had to signpost families in need to other charities for help with such items, it has been great to have the funds to be able to help our families directly.

If you need some support, or know of someone who is struggling, please get in touch.

Playing in the Red Dust - Moorside Primary School

This poem was created by Corben, Roxi, Lacey, Oscar, Leandra, and Millie from Moorside Primary School. It reflects their take on the red dust that once covered Consett — the cloud of iron oxide emitted during the Steelworks’ production because of this red clouds of dust would hang over the town, settling on cars and clothes hung out to dry, a sight captured in many photos of Consett from that time.

Duncan Barnett - Volunteer Podcast

Take a listen and discover the origins of our very own community garden. As a district councillor representing Benfieldside in the 1990s, listen to Duncan Barnett's description of the establishment of a community garden in Benfieldside, the very garden that we now call Benfieldside Community Garden.

Anne-Louise Grant - Consett Heritage Podcast

Anne-Louise was born in Consett in 1966, and grew up in a village nearby. Her Grandad on one side was a postman and on the other side a miner. Her Dad was a metallurgist at the Steelworks and she had many family members who lived and worked in the area (and still do). She returned to Consett in 2004 to raise her family, having left to seek employment in London in 1989.
